Privacy Policy
What personal data SN Media collects, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it.
Your trust matters to us. This policy sets out, in plain language, exactly what we do with your personal data — and what you can ask us to do with it.
01 Who we are
SN Media (“SN Media”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent international news and analysis publication. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data collected through this website and the services connected to it, including our newsletter and contact forms.
For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), SN Media is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. If you have any question about how we use your data, or wish to exercise a right, contact us at privacy@snmedia.com or through our contact page.
02 Data we collect
We collect only what we need to run the publication and to provide the services you ask for. Depending on how you use the site, that may include:
We do not ask for, and do not knowingly collect, special-category data (such as health, political opinions or religious beliefs) from readers. Please do not include such information in messages to us unless it is strictly necessary.
03 How and why we use your data
We use personal data for the following purposes, each with a lawful basis under the GDPR:
- To send our newsletter — on the basis of your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
- To respond to your enquiries — on the basis of our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us.
- To operate, secure and improve the site — on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a reliable, safe publication and understanding how it is used.
- To measure audience and performance — on the basis of your consent where analytics or advertising cookies require it.
- To meet legal obligations — where we are required to retain or disclose data by law.
We do not use your personal data to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you automatically.
We do not sell your personal data.
04 Cookies and analytics
Like most publications, we use cookies and similar technologies to keep the site working, remember your preferences and understand how our journalism is read. Non-essential cookies are only set where the law requires your consent and you have given it.
A full description of the cookies we use, and how to control them, is set out in our Cookie Policy.
05 Who we share data with
We share personal data only where it is necessary to run the publication, and only with providers bound to protect it. These may include:
- Hosting and infrastructure providers that operate our servers;
- Email and newsletter delivery providers;
- Analytics and security providers that help us measure and protect the site;
- Professional advisers and authorities, where we are legally required to disclose data.
Where a provider processes data outside your country, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision — to protect it.
06 How long we keep it
We keep personal data only for as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, and then delete or anonymise it. In practice:
- Newsletter data is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it;
- Contact messages are kept for as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any follow-up;
- Technical and analytics data is kept for a limited period and then aggregated or deleted.
07 Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data. Under the GDPR and UK GDPR these include the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- ask us to correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- ask us to delete your data (the “right to erasure”);
- restrict or object to how we use it;
- receive a copy of the data you gave us in a portable format;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing already carried out.
If you are in California, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell personal information.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@snmedia.com or use our contact page. We will respond within the time the law allows, and may need to verify your identity first.
If you believe we have handled your data unlawfully, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to address your concern first.
08 How we protect your data
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures — including encryption in transit, access controls and secure hosting — to protect personal data against loss, misuse and unauthorised access. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we work to keep our safeguards current.
09 Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
10 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or the law. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted on the site.
